Terry Wayne Smith

Terry Wayne Smith of Harvard, Illinois passed away on Saturday, June 4, at the Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford after a short illness.

Terry was born on December 7, 1944, to Hubert and Dorothy (Giltert) Smith in Granite City, Illinois. He graduated from Granite City High School, then attended Illinois Wesleyan University. Terry enlisted in the army and went to Vietnam to serve his country.  After returning, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University, where he earned a master’s degree in urban planning.  He met Susan Sebright while both worked in a government agency called the Office of Manpower Development, and they married on Saturday, November 29, 1975, in Shelbyville, Illinois.

Terry worked as a city administrator for several cities in Illinois. He ended his working career in Columbus, Wisconsin, and enjoyed some pleasant years of retirement.

Throughout Terry’s life he was fond of many activities, including golf and cooking. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He participated in various activities connected with veterans and was a member of the Harvard American Legion, Post 265.

It is often said that Terry was a powerful leader in a wonderful way. His gentle manner gave all those around him confidence to do great things. “Those around him” included the people who worked for him, his friends, his family and his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, a sister, Marsha Danner of Tampa, Florida, and a nephew, Chris Danner of DeLand, Florida.  His was preceded in death by his parents.

The memorial gathering and funeral will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church,  1100 N. Division St. Harvard, Illinois, on Friday, June 10. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., with the funeral at 11 a.m.  Burial will be following at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Memorials in his honor can be given to the Salvation Army or the Harvard American Legion Post 265.
