Leona Mae Luerssen, 85 of Cabool, MO went to be with the Lord on July 7, 2021 following a long fight with cancer. She was born on Feb. 25, 1936 in Harvard, IL the daughter of John and Mary (Drews) Krohn.
Leona married her high school sweetheart, Don Luerssen on Sept. 11, 1954 and to this union they were blessed with three children, Kathy, David and Michael. They made their home in Harvard and dairy farmed all of their lives. In 1998 they moved the family farm with their son, Mike and his family to Cabool, MO.
Some of Leona’s greatest joys were her flowers, writing poetry, square dancing, spending time with friends and family, Farm Bureau and sewing clothes. She was a huge Cubs ban and a fan of anyone playing the Cardinals. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran in Harvard, IL until their move in 1998; while there she was involved in the ladies circle, sang in the choir and on the church council. At the time of her death, she was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Willow Springs, MO where she was active in Ladies Guild, wrote the church newsletter, counsel and church choir.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, George and Laura Luerssen; son, David; daughter, Kathy Penzol; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Myrl Nash and brother-in-law, Larry Luerssen. She is survived by her husband, Don of the home; son, Mike and wife, Sandy of Cabool, MO; daughter-in-law, Cindy Luerssen of Lake Geneva, WI; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Friday, July 16 at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St. Harvard, IL 60033. The funeral will be at 11 AM Saturday, July 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 504 E Diggins St, Harvard, IL 60033. Pastor Elizabeth Martin will officiate. Interment will be at Big Foot Cemetery.
