Leola Turner, 98, of Harvard, died Monday, Aug. 30 surrounded by her family.
Leola (Carter) Turner, youngest child of Charles and Amanda (Guist) Carter, was born on March 12, 1923 in Readstown, WI. Graduating from Readstown High School in 1940, she attended Vernon County Normal in Viroqua, WI and started teaching school at the age of 19.
On November 27, 1947 she married John Harbert Turner. After teaching six years in Wisconsin at Harmony and Day Creek Schools, she and her family moved to Harvard, IL. In August of 1967, she received her teaching degree from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. She taught 24 years in Illinois at Caledonia, Poplar Grove, and Capron Elementary Schools.
She and John had three children: John Steven (Donna) Turner, Joan (Paul) Trott and Julie (Tim) Cassens. Also they were blessed with seven grandchildren: Renae (LeWayne) Groskinsky-Peters, Amanda (Joey) Trott-Simmons, John (Jennifer) Turner, Melissa Groskinsky-Walters, Jason (Megan) Trott, Rachael (Josh) Groskinsky-Rife, and Chris Turner. They also had eleven great-grandchildren.
Her husband John passed away on April 21, 1997 as did her son John Steven on May 5, 2014. Also passed are her parents, brothers and sisters namely Herbert (Thelma) Carter, Preston (Jane) Carter, Hazel (Orville) Holcomb, and Opal Carter.
The visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM funeral service Fri., Sept. 3 at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St., Harvard, IL 60033. Interment will be in Dunham-Chemung Cemetery in Chemung, IL.
