Larry Layman Obituary

Larry W. Layman, 89, of Harvard, Illinois, and formerly of Ellenton, Florida, passed away on January 5, 2026. Born on April 22, 1936, in Harvard, Illinois, he was the son of the late Walter and Darlene (York) Layman.

On September 26, 1961, Larry married Mary (Fran) Smith. Together, they raised five children and had a loving marriage of 64 years. Larry proudly served in the US Navy.
He worked at Union Special in Huntley, IL most of his life.

Larry enjoyed fishing and camping trips with family and friends. He was dedicated to his family and enjoyed spending time with them above all else. Larry will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.


Larry is survived by his children, Ruth (Bill Loy) Garman, Derek (Laura) Layman, Stephanie “Stacy” Peters, and Diane (Roy Luth) Pelayo; grandchildren, Katie, Jacob, Zack, Matt, Hillary, Roni, and Karla; great-grandchildren, Derek, AJ, Maxx, Mikele, Daveon, Kayleigh, Omari, Alivia, and Daniela; and his brother Ronald (Rita) Layman. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Darlene Layman; wife, Mary (Fran) Layman(Smith); son, Chad Layman; sons-in-law, Mitchell “Mitch” Garman and Jeff Peters; sister, Karen Garey; and sister-in-law Catherine Smith. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 1:00-3:00PM at Wild Cherries restaurant, 413 Southtowne Dr., Belvidere, IL 61008. His remains will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL, alongside his wife and son, Chad. Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home is honored to serve the Layman family.
