John R. Mulvenna

John R. Mulvenna, 76, of Capron, Illinois, passed away at home on Thursday, July 30, 2026, with his wife of 36 years, Pam, by his side.

Born in Harvard, Illinois, John was the cherished son of Robert and Charlene (Cates) Mulvenna. He grew up in the community, graduating from Harvard High School with the proud Class of 1968. He was a gifted and passionate athlete. John’s first love was basketball, followed closely by his appreciation for football and baseball. His talent on the court took him to Eastern Washington University (EWU), where he continued his education and played basketball.

John stayed on to serve as a graduate assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, lending his keen eye to player recruitment. His contributions to the university’s sports history were permanently honored when he was inducted into the EWU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

John married Pam, daughter of Earl and Phyllis Regnier of Capron. Together, John and Pam had one son, Matthew. In his career, John was a businessman who owned J & P Construction, specializing in pole buildings.

He cherished time spent traveling throughout Wisconsin, creating memories on trips shared with his family and his in-laws. In his younger days, John was often seen cruising around in his car with his faithful English Bulldog riding shotgun. An avid college basketball fan, John cheered for Gonzaga College. He rooted for the Chicago Bears during football season. When he wasn’t watching sports, he enjoyed old classic Western shows like Gunsmoke.

John found his greatest joy being a volunteer at Harvard High School doing what he loved: teaching the game of basketball. The gym was a place for personal growth, discipline, and building a foundation to enjoy life to the fullest. Just as he had with his own father, John shared his love of the game with his son, creating countless cherished memories together. What an adventure Dad and Son had together.

John’s laughter filled the whole house. He brought joy into the lives of everyone who knew him. He had a genuine heart for people and his kindness helping a neighbor or stranger would leave a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He lived life to the fullest, his way. His presence, his humor, and his big heart will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Pam; son, Matthew (Val) Mulvenna; siblings, Ruth Godo, Mary Jo (Jerry) Rousey, Peggy Ellison; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Charlene Mulvenna; brothers, James and Jerry Mulvenna; brothers-in-law, Frank Godo, Ron Ellison; and parents-in-law, Earl and Phyllis Regnier.

In keeping with John’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Friends and family are invited to a short graveside service on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 1:00PM. John will be laid to rest next to his brothers at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Harvard.

Pam extends her thanks to Journey Care Hospice, especially Monika, Lisa, and Michelle, whose dedicated and compassionate care brought immense comfort to John.
