James "Jim" Mathews

James “Jim” Baker Mathews, 82, of Harvard, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI.

Jim was born April 22, 1943, to Lyle E. and Dorothy M. (Palmer) Mathews in Harvard, IL.  He was a proud Veteran of the US Army.

Throughout his life, Jim was chief of police in Capron, worked with the state police, owned an ambulance service, and two-way radio business.

He enjoyed camping and was a huge avid Elvis Presley fan.  He loved to entertain people with his Elvis impersonator act.

Jim was also a member of the Chemung United Methodist Church, the Harvard Moose Lodge, and the Harvard American Legion.

Jim is survived by his children Dorothy (Michael) Roewer of Harvard and Jamie Mathews of Capron, IL, four grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and brother George (Judy) Mathews of Roscoe, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Lyle Mathews, and brother Lester P. Mathews.

The visitation will be 10 AM until the 11 AM funeral service Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Capron United Methodist Church, 250 W. North St., Capron, IL 61012.  Pastor Jordan Gardner will officiate.  Interment will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Harvard.

There will be a luncheon back at Capron United Methodist Church after the graveside service.
