James A. Grenlund, 92, of Capron, Illinois, died peacefully in his home on the farm on July 24, 2025, where he was born and raised.
Born April 30, 1933, in Rockford, Illinois, to Jay and Ella (Ellwanger) Grenlund.
A graduate of North Boone High School, Jim went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Iowa State College in Ames. It was there he met Norma Hartmann. The two married in 1956 in Des Plaines, Illinois, and together raised two children, Deborah and Steven.
Jim served as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He was grateful for the opportunity to serve his country and see the world. He and Norma made the most of their time abroad, traveling Western Europe, and their passion for travel continued well after returning stateside, visiting nearly every corner of the U.S., along with Canada and Mexico.
Jim carried on the family farming tradition with a successful cattle and grain operation.
Jim believed it was important to give back to his community by: 20 years as a 4-H leader, long-time Beef Superintendent at the Boone County Fair, and service on the U of I Extension Council and North Boone School Board for 11 years. His leadership extended further as President of the Illinois Beef Association, Director of the National Cattlemen's Association, 30 plus years as a Pioneer Sales Representative, board member for Belvidere Mutual Insurance Company, Belvidere Bank/Alpine Bancorp, the Boone County Board of Review, and the Small Business Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, District No. 7.
Jim was a devoted father to Steven (Roxann) Grenlund; a strong and steady Grandpa Jim to Jessica (Luke) Borchardt and Kayla (Matt) Clayton; and a proud Great Grandpa Jim to Colton and Brinley Borchardt, and Drake and Phoenix Clayton.
He also leaves behind his godson, Todd Hartmann, and two very dear family friends, Bosa and Mark Suljic, whose loyalty and friendship he deeply valued.
Jim’s family wishes to thank Courtney Castelein, NP; SuAnn and Stacey from Peak Medical; and the exceptional team at Mercyhealth Hospice Illinois for their compassion, commitment, and care during his final chapter.
As per Jim’s request, there will be no visitation or formal service.
