D. Gary Campbell, 94, of Harvard, IL passed away on October 18, 2024.
Gary was born in Lyon Mountain, NY on May 26, 1930. Lyon Mountain was a small mining town in the Adirondack Mountains of New York.
He was seventeen when he earned his private pilot license and began his career in aviation. He attended Northrup School of Aviation, then joined the United States Air Force where he served in England on the flight crew of General Griswald. On leaving the Air Force, he was employed by American Airlines. In 1969, he and his business partner opened Cardinal Aircraft Service at Campbell Airport, Grayslake, IL. It was in operation for nearly 50 years.
Gary and Marilyn Sherman were married in 1960. It was 64 years of love and togetherness on their small farm where they raised horses. Many weekends were spent showing their horses. He is survived by Marilyn and many loving family members and friends. He brought light and laughter to family, friends, and everyone fortunate to know him. His infectious positive outlook, wry smile, and quick wit were his lifelong calling card. His Adirondack roots and never-quit values served him well throughout his life and encouraged those around him to strive and achieve what may have otherwise considered beyond their reach.
Burial will be in Hermon, NY and a Celebration of Life will be held on the farm for family and friends in the spring of 2025.
