Eugene “Gene” Cavin, 89, of Harvard passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford.
He was born on December 31, 1933 in Alden to Raymond and Eleanora (Brunner) Cavin.
On July 20, 1954, Gene married his beloved wife Carol (Thomfohrda) in St. Louis, Missouri.
Gene enjoyed the simple things in life; instant coffee, “because I’m only going to need one cup,” taking fishing trips to Minnesota and Kentucky with his family, watching his NASCAR races, and winning numerous trophies go-karting with his son, Dave.
He worked for many years in the manufacturing industry before retiring from Capron Manufacturing as a supervisor. He also spent many years as a member of the Harvard Rescue Squad.
Gene is survived by his two children, David Cavin of Argyle, WI and Gina Cavin of Wister, OK, sister Joanne Collins of Belvidere, four grandchildren, Adam (Anna) Panisiak of Hermitage, TN, Georgia (Alan) Kirkes of Broken Arrow, OK, Christina Panisiak of Clayton, OK, and Angelica Baumman, of Janesville, WI, seven great-grandchildren Mac, Clark, Wyatt, Colton, Darcy, Emma, and Oliver, and special sister-in-law Lana Cavin.
He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Eleanora Cavin, his wife, Carol Jean Cavin, his daughter Georgia “Gigi” Cavin, two grandchildren, Dustin Panisiak and Daniel “Danny” Panisiak, two great-grandchildren Andrew and Emily Kirkes, and his brothers Robert “Bob” Cavin and Francis “Fran” Cavin.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 21 from 10 AM to 12 PM at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home. A service will follow at 12:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harvard.
