Elisabeth “Lissie” Gerdemann Lulofs, a cherished pillar of the Harvard, Illinois community, beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, sister, and friend, has passed away. Known for her warmth, strength, and remarkable hospitality, Lissie touched the lives of countless people throughout her journey.

Early Life & Roots in Germany

Lissie spent her youth surrounded by the beauty of her family’s established farm, Des Hofes Gerdemann, in Münster, Germany. Growing up on the family estate instilled in her a strong work ethic, a deep appreciation for heritage, and an enduring connection to her roots that she carried with her throughout her entire life.

The Heritage House & Her Extended Family

While in Germany, Lissie met Jack Lulofs. When they set off for the United States in 1985, Jack jokingly promised her they would only stay for one year—a stay that beautifully turned into more than 40 years of shared life and memories.

Together in Harvard, Illinois, Lissie and Jack owned and operated The Heritage House. Following Jack’s passing, it was Lissie’s resilience, tireless spirit, and genuine warmth that kept the restaurant thriving. To Lissie, The Heritage House was never just a business—it was a true home, and the extraordinarily loyal staff and devoted regulars were like family. She treated her customers like dear friends, greeted everyone with a welcoming presence, and fostered a close-knit team that stood faithfully by her side through every season.

Family & Connections Across the Ocean

Lissie maintained a special bond with her family abroad and especially loved welcoming and spending time with her German grand nieces and grand nephews whenever they traveled to visit her in the States. In America, she took great pride in watching the next generations grow, holding a special place in her heart for Emily and Sarah St. Cyr, and experiencing the pure joy of meeting her great-grandson, “Griffy”, this past year.

In Quiet Peace

Lissie entered into peaceful rest surrounded by family, devoted friends, and the gentle comfort of soft music. Following a brave, continued journey with cancer and health challenges, her weary body has finally found quiet ease. Her strength throughout it all was an inspiration, and she deserved nothing less than the gentle peace that embraced her in the end.
