Edward Ayer "Ted" Crumb III, a devoted family man, proud veteran, and dedicated public servant, passed away on February 27, 2026, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was 81 years old.
Born on January 13, 1945, in Harvard, Illinois, Ted embodied a lifelong commitment to service and duty. After graduating high school, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably from 1964 to 1966.
Following his military service, Ted pursued a distinguished career in law enforcement and public safety. He served as a police officer with the Harvard Police Department and later with the Rock Valley Community College Police Department in Rockford, Illinois for Rockford Park District. His dedication to his community extended further through his volunteer work with the Harvard Rescue Squad. Ted also enjoyed a successful career with IBM before retiring from both his corporate and public service roles.
Ted was a man of faith who worshipped in the Lutheran tradition. His faith provided him with strength and purpose throughout his life. Outside of his professional and spiritual commitments, Ted found joy in boating—a cherished pastime that brought him peace and reflected his love for adventure and the outdoors.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Crumb; his two sons, Teddy (Nicki) Crumb and Daren (Coral) Crumb; and his sister Candice (Brian) Joern as well as grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Michael (Fern) Crumb and sister Pamela (Thomas) Hoey.
A life well-lived leaves behind treasured memories for those who knew him. May Edward Ayer "Ted" Crumb III’s legacy of service, devotion to family, and love of life bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 3 until 7 PM at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St., Harvard, IL 60033.
