Clarice "Claire" Huter

Clarice Christine Huter, 95, of Marengo, Illinois passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Cedarhurst, where she resided the past five months.

She was born in Lisbon, Wisconsin to Henry Schafer and Rose Lemmer Schafer. Growing up, her family lived on several farms in southeastern Wisconsin. After graduating from Waukesha High School, she worked in the Milwaukee Public Library.

Claire married Joseph Huter in 1960 and they resided in Palatine, Illinois. They liked going to the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Claire missed country life, and in 1974 she and Joe built their new home in Marengo, Illinois. She started out with two sheep and chickens. Eventually, she kept only chickens where the fresh eggs were used for her many cakes, cookies, and breads that she brought to family get togethers. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing her own clothes most of her life. She enjoyed listening to classical music, going to flea markets, and cooking from scratch, trying all kinds of recipes. Up until ten years ago, she planted a large garden where she grew many vegetables and canned them. After Joe passed in 2005, Claire was determined to continue living in the country home they built. Over the years, she had several cats that kept her company and who now miss her.

Survivors include her cats, Rina and Spike, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph Huter, sisters: Elsie Knoll, Mary Burkhardt, Susie Bennett, Magdalene Schafer, and brothers: Leo Schafer, Gregory Schafer and Eugene Schafer.

The Rosary will be Friday, July 12, 2024 at 10 a.m. until the Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church, 425 Grand Ave., Mukwonago, Wisconsin. Immediately following the Mass, there will be a time for sharing memories during the luncheon at the Big Foot Inn, 11508 U.S. 14, Harvard, IL.  After the luncheon, the burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Cemetery in Harvard, Illinois.
