Elaine E. (Meyer) Slavin

Elaine Elizabeth Slavin, of Harvard, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Rock Haven Skilled Nursing Home in Janesville, WI. Elaine was born August 18, 1921, in Carroll, IA to Eleanor(Hermsen) and Nicholas Meyer. Elaine graduated from Danbury High School in Iowa and later attended McHenry County College.

Elaine met her husband John ”Jack” Slavin of Hebron, IL  in Sioux City, IA 1942. They married on November 3, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, IA. They lived in Fort Knox, KY on an Army Base before moving to Harvard, IL. They transferred to Fond du Lac, WI for work in 1952 and returned to Harvard in 1969 where they built their family home. Elaine and Jack were happily married for 67 beautiful years. 

They loved to travel. Trips included Ireland, Austria, Alaska, and Hawaii. Many of their winters were spent in Mesa, AZ and West Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Elaine’s most cherished memories were visiting her relatives in Danbury, IA. Elaine’s greatest joy was spending time with her beloved family.

Elaine was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, The Altar and Rosary Society, The Moose Lodge and Elks Club. She enjoyed golfing, dancing, playing the organ, gardening and camping. Elaine played bridge and had many friends at the Harvard Senior Center.

Elaine and Jack had six children: Patricia Slavin, John N. (Patti) Slavin, Jeanne Cullen, Michael A. (Diane) Slavin and Jeffrey A. (Mary) Slavin; 11 grandchildren: Scott (Sachiko) Fintel, Ryan Fintel, Krista (Andy) Biaggi, Trisha (Dr. Earl) Vanbuskirk, Jay Slavin, Laura Jo (Josh) Greisen, Ashley (Mark) Duffy, Sara Jo (Jeff) DeFrancesca, Jake, Katie, and Adam Slavin; 7 great-grandchildren Anna, Erin Fintel, Max and Mason Biaggi, Siddalee Van Buskirk, Zoey Slavin and Aspen Greisen.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jack; daughter Mary Jo (Slavin) Skalla; siblings Rita Fitzpatrick, Richard Meyer, and Gary Meyer.

The Visitation will be from 9:00 -10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home; 107 W. Sumner St. Harvard, IL 60033. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 206 E. Front, St. Harvard, IL 60033. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
